a. Overview

Overweight and obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to personal health. Being overweight or obese is a major risk factor for developing many chronic and even fatal diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or cancer. These conditions are the fifth leading cause of death worldwide, resulting in the deaths of at least 2.8 million adults per year. In 2005, the World Health Organization conducted research showing that roughly 1.6 billion adults were overweight, 400 million were obese and at least 20 million children under age 5 were overweight. If this trend continues, experts believe that by 2015 about 2.3 billion adults will be overweight and over 700 million will be obese.

b. Causes of Obesity

The fundamental cause of obesity and overweight is an energy imbalance in terms of calories consumed and calories used. Because of global trends towards the increased intake of high-energy and fat foods, as well as physical inactivity from improving technology and urbanization, we have seen a rapid rise in obesity incidences worldwide. Obesity is a complex health issue to address, as there are a number of factors playing a causative role such as behavior, environment, culture, socioeconomic status, and genetic background.

c. Consequences of Obesity

Being overweight or obese is a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders, and some cancers. Obesity during childhood is associated with a higher chance of adulthood obesity, premature death and disability. In addition, obese children often have difficulty breathing, increased risk of broken bones, hypertension, insulin resistance, and psychological trauma.

There are economic consequences for being overweight or obese as well. Our health systems are severely impacted by rising medical costs, and decreased productivity/restricted activity leads to loss of income.

d. Diagnosis and Treatment

One way to determine whether or not a person is overweight or obese is by measuring body mass index (BMI). BMI is a person’s weight divided by the square of his/her height. A BMI of greater than or equal to 30 is considered obese and a BMI of greater than or equal to 25 is considered overweight.

Some successful weight-loss treatments include setting goals and making lifestyle changes such as eating fewer calories and being physically active. Medicine and possibly even surgery are also options if it seems that lifestyle changes aren’t enough. However, these should be used as a last resort as they come with many complications and risks. The most important first step to losing weight is setting realistic goals. Maintaining a healthy balance of diet and exercise, and if necessary, taking natural supplements for support is a good way to go about losing weight.

e. Obesity Prevention

Steps can be taken on an individual level such as limiting energy intake from total fats and sugars and increasing consumption of fruits and vegetables. Also, engaging in physical activity is very important. However, as a society, it is important for everyone to create opportunities and access to a healthy lifestyle. Society should work to support individuals in preventing obesity by making regular physical activity and healthier dietary choices available, affordable and easily accessible to all. Moreover, the food industry can help to make processed foods healthier and practice responsible marketing.
