a. Overview

Pain can be either chronic or acute. Acute pain is often the result of disease, tissue injury or inflammation. The good news is that this type of pain generally only lasts for a given amount of time and reaches a certain severity level. However, chronic pain in and of itself can be similar to a disease. Inflammation, just like pain, can also be acute or chronic. In the U.S., pain is the most frequent reason for doctor visits, with about half of the population seeking pain treatments each year. Nonetheless, the treatment options for pain have changed very little in the past several decades.

Inflammation is defined as a localized reaction that results in redness, warmth, swelling, and pain from infection, irritation, or injury. Inflammation can be either internal or external. It is the body’s way of protecting itself. With inflammation, the body attempts to remove harmful stimuli such as damaged cells, irritants, or pathogens. However, sometimes inflammation can lead to further inflammation and excessive tissue damage.

b. Causes of Body Pain and Inflammation

Inflammation recruits the body’s white blood cells to fight infection from foreign substances. Thus although our immediate reaction to inflammation is to stop it, it is important to realize that inflammation is an essential part of the body’s attempt to heal itself. However, autoimmune diseases can cause the body’s immune system to trigger an inflammatory response against one’s own tissue even when there are no foreign substances to fight.

c. Signs and Symptoms of Inflammation

The first stage of inflammation is typically called irritation, which then leads to inflammation. The inflammation is then followed by another stage, suppuration, also known as the discharging of pus. Following suppuration is granulation, the formation of small rounded masses of tissue in wounds during the healing process. If there were no inflammation, infections and wounds would never heal. There are five cardinal signs of acute inflammation including:

  • Pain
  • Redness
  • Immobility
  • Swelling
  • Heat

d. Ways to Treat and Reduce Pain and Inflammation

Anti-inflammatory medications such as NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) can be taken to alleviate pain from inflammation. NSAIDs include naproxen, ibuprofen, and aspirin. Acetaminophen can also reduce pain associated with inflammation, but does not actually have anti-inflammatory effects. This is ideal for those wishing to treat the pain while leaving the inflammation alone. Finally, corticosteroids are a class of steroid hormones that are anti-inflammatory by preventing phospholipid release. However, many of these have severe side effects such as diabetes that are almost inevitable if taken.
